After one full month of testing, too many shirt tags to count have been saved!

Initial Set-up

I received a Kinisium Kini Wireless motion sensor February 20th. When I got the small package I was pleased to find a very clear and detailed instructions manual. When you first open the box you will create an account to register your device. The simple form includes your phone number so that the device can send you text messages. Once you get the device registered, and a full charge, you will locate an included small pin. It is similar to what you use for a cell phone SIM card, which is used to power on the device. This is a great feature to prevent would be perpetrators from being able to turn the Kini off. With my new device registered and charged with the included USB-c cable. I was faced with the tough decision of where to place it. Initially I put the device in big gun safe. This lasted about a day before I decided there’s a better use. It was moved to my stop box where I store my CCW firearm. As far as security goes the small Kini Motion Sensor definitely did its job. However it was a fairly uneventful. I was getting “motion detected” text when I would retrieve my pistol in the mornings and when I put it away at night. Turns out nobody is messing with my stop box, which is responsibly out of the reach of my kids. This led to my third placement. I wanted to truly test this thing out, see how quickly it sends a text, and if it provides enough time to respond. About this time my 3 year old child had decided that the tags on his shirts and pants are “itchy”. Recent arts and crafts activities at school had taught him how to operate scissors. The trifecta, he is now tall enough to reach drawers. Specifically the drawer where we keep out hot pads and, you guessed, it SCISSORS!

Shortly after the fatal destruction of several pairs of pants. Due to a little too aggressive cuts. The Kini was re-homed from the Stop box and securely attached to our kitchen scissors.

Testing

The first evening of this new location came with fantastic results. I was checking the steaks on the grill, my wife had taken the baby upstairs to change him. Our 3 year old with these pesky tags on this shirt was on the move! I received a text message from the number I had saved in my phone as “scissor alert” and assigned a specific ring tone. The race was on! Unfortunately this first alert I was a little slow. I finished flipping 2 more steaks. Then pulled out my phone to get the camera rolling. By the time I got inside the tags had suffered their fate. However; the Kini proved that it does exactly what it is supposed to do.

After my failure to get there in time, I began to wonder how quickly the Kini actually sends an sms. The Kinisium website says 10 second alert time, we will see about that.

The test: My control was 30 movement events. I used a stop watch, which started as soon as device is moved, and ends when my sms alert tone sounds.

The results: over 30 test the average time to receive a text message was 5.80 second. The lowest time was 4.20 seconds and the longest was 7.70 seconds.

Over the next few weeks it became kind of a joke between my wife and I especially if I was at work. Any time she would get in the scissors drawer she abruptly got a text from me telling her not to cut holes in her t shirts. The Kini did in fact save several of our toddlers clothes from extra ventilation holes.

This powerful little accessory has been running for a little over a month now sending at least 3-4 texts a day with no signs of needing recharged.
